Safeathome.ca invites you to join our National Outreach to save Canadian lives!

This Sunday, March 9th when you change your clocks be sure to also replace the batteries in every smoke alarm in your home. But don't make the mistake of putting new batteries into old, expired alarms. SMOKE ALARMS DO NOT LAST FOREVER. After 10 years they need to be replaced.

Hundreds of men, women and children die each year in Canadian house fire
tragedies. Help us save these lives!

BY THE NUMBERS

  • History shows us that in nearly 2 out of every 3 home fire deaths,
smoke alarms have either been tampered with, removed or do not exist.
  • 1 out of 2 Canadians admit to removing a battery or the entire smoke alarm itself when attempting to silence a nuisance alarm.
  • 3 out of 4 Canadians mistakenly believe that smoke alarms last indefinitely.
  • Smoke alarms wear out. Any smoke alarm 10 years or older should be replaced immediately, regardless of whether it is wired into the home.

DID YOU KNOW

Pressing the Test button tells you the alarm is operating, but if the alarm itself is more than 10 years old, it needs to be replaced!

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Change your smoke alarm batteries on March 9th and check the age of your alarms. Look for a date sticker or date stamp on or inside the alarm. If you can't tell how old it is, or cannot remember when you bought it - replace it to be safe at home!
  • Watch the Lose and Hour...Gain a Life video and forward it to all those you care about. A life could depend on it.
