Protection: Escape Ladders

The best escape route is the safest route, however, if stairs or corridors are blocked by fire and smoke, a window may be your option.

To increase your chances of a safe escape from a second floor window, store a fire escape ladder under the bed or in a cupboard in rooms that are located on upper floors.  This way you can access them quickly should a fire occur, and the room fills with smoke and your vision is impaired.

Escape ladders unfold as they are installed from the window ledge of an upper floor window.   They are strong enough to carry the weight of an adult and child at the same time.  Escape ladders are not to be reused. 

Where to Install your Escape Ladder

The first step in ensuring effective warning and protection by fire safety equipment is to ensure that it is installed properly. Follow the tips below when installing fire escape ladders:

• Place a fire escape ladder in each bedroom on a second floor or higher.
  
  
• Place ladders under beds or in cupboards so you can find them even if darkness or smoke impede your vision – but keep them within reach for quick, easy access.
